Helioseismology Present and Future
نویسنده
چکیده
The subject of helioseismology is in a exciting phase of expansion. in terms of the methods being developed and applied, the new and challenging results coming out from the high-quality data that present observational campaigns, networks and missions are providing, the arrival of GONG+, the prospects for new missions including Solar Dynamics Observatory, and the recent groundbased results and exciting prospects for asteroseismology of other solar-like stars. I pick up on some themes of the conference, and expand on the above developments and activities.

The Implications for Helioseismology of Experimental Uncertainties in Newton’s Constant
The experimental uncertainties in G between different experiments have important implications for helioseismology. We show that these uncertainties for the standard solar model lead to a range in the value of the square of the sound speed in the nuclear region that is as much as 0.15% higher than the inverted helioseismic sound speed. While a lower value of G is preferred for the standard model...
متن کاملValidation of Time-distance Helioseismology by Use of Realistic Simulations of Solar Convection
Recent progress in realistic simulations of solar convection have given us an unprecedented opportunity to evaluate the robustness of solar interior structures and dynamics obtained by methods of local helioseismology. We present results of testing the time-distance method using realistic simulations. By computing acoustic wave propagation time and distance relations for different depths of the...
متن کاملImaging the Solar Tachocline by Time-Distance Helioseismology
The solar tachocline at the bottom of the convection zone is an important region for the dynamics of the Sun and the solar dynamo. In this region, the sound speed inferred by global helioseismology exhibits a bump of approximately 0.4% relative to the standard solar model. Global helioseismology does not provide any information on possible latitudinal variations or asymmetries between the North...
متن کاملHelioseismic tests of diffusion theory
We present a quantitative estimate of the accuracy of the calculated diffusion coefficients, by comparing predictions of solar models with observational data provided by helioseismology. By taking into account the major uncertainties in building solar models we conclude that helioseismology confirms the diffusion efficiency adopted in SSM calculations, to the 10% level.
متن کاملNew Solar Composition: The Problem With Solar Models Revisited
We construct updated solar models with different sets of solar abundances, including the most recent determinations by Asplund et al. (2009). The latter work predicts a slightly larger solar metallicity compared to previous measurements by the same authors but significantly lower than the recommended value from a decade ago. The new solar models incorporate an updated equation of state and new ...
